ABOUT THE CREATOR

Erika Byers

I am black, I am a woman, and now I am a mother. These identities shape everything about my existence, but also grant me membership into a sisterhood like no other. Black women across the diaspora have unique experiences as it relates to pregnancy, labor, post partum, parenting and our health.

I initially wanted to compile the memoirs of mothers across all races, so we had a raw, honest place to share our collective experiences. There is too much sugarcoated information out there and I think we all deserve to know the truth. I figured if more of us tell our truth, we can set our sisters up for a better informed experience. The direction of the project shifted after I participated in the 4th Trimester Bodies Project Community Sharing event. I was moved to tears. There was healing in the communal sharing of our experiences. Soon after, I joined a mom group for mothers of color in Brooklyn. Each week we sat around a roundtable and just talked, while our children played together. We discussed all of the things that we experienced as mamas of color. It was such a transformative space, while it lasted.

I didn’t want it to stop there. And I didn’t want to limit it to that small group of women in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. We’re going to make this global. Join me as we use our stories to strengthen our sisterhood connection.
